Festival of Light

On this longest night of the year, the Festival of Light (aka. solstice, christmas, diwali, hanukkah, st. lucy) marks the beginning of a new solar year. During this time of renewal and rebirth, the human spirit is rekindled from darkness into light. Come out and celebrate with us on Friday December 21st from 7pm - 11pm at the Burly House.

This year we are decorating cookies! Choose from oatmeal raisin snowmen, lemon poppy seed menorahs, gingerbread maidens, chocolate chip candy canes, and sugar spice stars. Our icing is homemade with organic fruit juices (no red dye #5) and of course the cookies are yummy vegan delicious ;) Share in the fun and give a handcrafted gift this year.

May peace, love, and happiness prevail in the coming new year.

2008 beginner yoga workshops

Thursday evenings at the Burly House will serve host to beginner workshops starting January 17th with Yoga for Beginners.

This 10 hour course introduces students to the Hatha Yoga practice including the primary physical postures, breathing exercises, and philosophy. Each week the class will learn new practices as well as review the principles taught from the previous week to further integrate the technique and methodology. Each class is adapted for personalized attention to individual needs in a nurturing non-competitive atmosphere. Completion of this program will enable students to practice safely and confidently whether in a large class room or privately at home. For more information, cost and the details.

Stay tuned for the Ashtanga beginner workshop March 6th and Sivananda beginner workshop April 24th.

first Wednesdays dinner

Join us on the first Wednesday of each month for dinner. Beginning February 6th, a vegan pot luck will follow the 7:30p meditation. Bring a friend to class and a dish to pass. With continued interest we hope to follow the tradition throughout the coming year. Stay for yoga, meditation, dinner, or all of the above!

finishing touches

Yes, there is newspaper over the front windows at the Burly House. Please pardon our appearance while the paint is drying in the practice rooms. We hope to have the finishing touches complete by the end of next week. Private classes will continue as scheduled. All public classes will resume Wednesday November 28th. See you then.

studio resignation

The rise of yoga popularity in the West has brought with it an increase in the size and cost of classes. In an effort to keep quality yoga instruction safe, affordable and available to the community - i will continue teaching public and private classes at homes, schools, and offices, but will resign from studios.

I have had the fortunate opportunity to be a part of and observe the student- teacher relationship across many different settings and cultures. One theme that has remained prominent is that students learn best from smaller class sizes and more frequent instruction. It is my intention to foster such an environment for the greatest success and understanding of the yoga and meditation practice.

All prepaid classes at Casa de Luz will be honored for future classes at an alternate location or towards private instruction. During this time of transition, please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns that may arise. There are new classes and community events on the horizon, so be sure to check the website schedule for updates.

Monday evening classes at the Burly House

The beginner yoga & meditation donation classes meeting Monday evenings at 6pm will be moving to Wednesdays at 6:30pm beginning October 3. The Thursday evening intermediate yoga donation class will continue as scheduled at 6:30pm. Blessings to all this coming equinox and the welcomed change of seasons. Be well.

Classes to resume Thursday September 27th

I am excited to announce that after much deliberation and further encouragement, that i will be embarking on a solo backpacking adventure on the Big Island of Hawaii beginning Wednesday September 19th.

During my absence, Marcie will be teaching the Casa de Luz classes and the Burly House classes will be cancelled. Private classes will also be postponed. All classes will resume Thursday September 27th to meet at their usual day and time. See you then!

Gift Certificates and private sessions

Gift certificates and reduced rate classes are now available. Students are encouraged to buy private sessions or reduced rate cards to inspire their own personal practice. Give friends and family the gift of yoga with gift certificates this season. Redeemable for individual classes, reduced rate cards, and private sessions.

A private individual session allows for the greatest success with direct one-on-one attention. Each class includes plenty of time for questions as well as a detailed written review of the instructions to be practiced later. The sessions are tailored according to the individuals evolving needs, meets either weekly/ monthly/seasonly and averages in length 60 - 90 minutes. Whether interested in developing an at home practice or maintaining a personal practice that is informed, contact me for details and to schedule a time that is convenient for us both.

Huge Free Day of Yoga Thank You!

The Free Day of Yoga was a whole lot of fun and a HUGE success! Thank you to everyone who participated in the events and brought along friends, brothers, boyfriends, moms, sisters, and even a baby sitter. The rooms were packed at both the venues and i believe there may be photos somewhere at Seventh Street from the afternoon class. I'll post them if i find them.

Yoga Co-Op Fall Schedule

I am excited to announce the release of the new Fall schedule and classes for the Yoga Co-Op at Casa de Luz . Due to special events and the Austin City Limits Music Festival, the weekend classes will begin September 22nd. I will be teaching the Saturday September 29th class at 11am. Free Day of Yoga

Monday September 3rd is Free Day of Yoga across the city of Austin. Join me during the Labor Day holiday for yoga all day long - for FREE! This is an excellent opportunity to introduce friends to the practice who have never tried yoga, as well as meeting new teachers and trying different styles of yoga.

My teaching schedule for the Free Day of Yoga event will be:

Check the schedule for details and directions.

This Monday is also the last day that students will receive the $7 per class rate at Casa de Luz. Of the compromises that the teachers had to consider with the increase in our rent, this was the best option. Our best suggestion is to purchase a class pass at the discounted rate before September 3rd. There will be opportunities to purchase passes immediately following the Free Day of Yoga classes.

Gift Certificates are now available for class passes, private sessions, and holiday gift giving. Contact me for details.

Courtney has practice yoga since 2000 and taught since 2003. She is also a massage therapist with a focus in structural bodywork, shiatsu, and thai yoga massage - she incorporates elements of these modalities into yoga. meditation for health

The benefits of yoga and meditation have been touted for thousands of years and revealed by the health and vitality of its practioners. More recently, the National Institute of Health and the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine have also recognized mindfulness meditation as a resource for establishing and maintaining good health. According to international studies, meditation has been used as a method to aid such health problems as anxiety, pain, depression, insomnia, stress, and trauma, as well as in the complementary treatment of cardiovascular (heart) disease, HIV/AIDS, and cancer patients. Mindfulness meditation is the inward focusing of attention on what is being experienced without judgement, reaction or emotion, to allow for a greater balance and acceptance in daily life.

The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine has researched and compiled an informed report about the health benefits related to mindfulness meditation and key points for a health patient to consider when selecting a CAM (Complementary and Alternative Medicine) practitioner. As such a wonderful method as mindfulness meditation becomes more widely spread, it is important to remain aware and educated consumers. Please take a moment to review and consider this information - and always check with your insurer or health care provider to see if meditation is covered. If not, petition your provider to consider a complementary or alternative method of treatment.

May we all be well.

mid winter thaw

It looks as if the garden is finally thawing and will survive just fine - despite the 2 inches or more of solid ice that coated most of central Texas for 3 days. I hope everyone enjoyed the hibernation and has recovered from any residual cabin fever.

During this time, classes and the schedule at Casa De Luz were still being negotiated and have yet to finalize. Therefore the Wednesday 9am classes will be postponed until further notice. I apologize for the inconvenience and will update as soon as an alternate time slot is decided.

snow day

Due to the current weather conditions, all public and private classes will be cancelled. Once the temperatures rise and i can remove the ice to get into my vehicle, classes will resume at their usual time and place. Be safe out there and have fun in the snow!
